LOCATIONS

OVERVIEW.
Please review the maps page for an overview of how much of the city is currently available to characters. Anything shaded gray is currently inaccessible by player characters. The area to the southeast across the river is inaccessible, full stop.

Should characters attempt to walk into an unlocked area of the city, they will find themselves walking right back out with no memory of how they turned around. Should they attempt to ride the subway into an unlocked area, they will find their train arriving right back at the station they just left.

The locations listed below represent most types of building or business currently available to characters, but is not a comprehensive list. Think of any retail location you may have been able to find in a medium-sized American city in the mid-2000s. Now imagine the most generic version of that, scrubbed of all identifying brand information, and you've arrived at almost every shop in the city. Please check with the mods if you want to know about major locations, of which there would likely only be one in the city—such as, for example, zoos or baseball stadiums—but players are welcome to assume the existence of smaller businesses that would reasonably be duplicated throughout the city.

Buildings that are marked CLOSED are inaccessible and cannot be entered by player characters. This includes attempted breaking and entering, which will be unsuccessful no matter what the character tries.

If you are interested in exploring a location not currently shown on this page, please drop by the mod contact page to discuss beforehand.
CHARACTER-RUN LOCATIONS.
Characters are able to operate businesses and community spaces, such as art galleries, bookstores, medical clinics, etc. provided that the goal of the space is collaborative and not exclusionary. Players can submit the below information in a comment to this page, and the mod team will ensure that their character-run location is added.

LOCATION NAME: This will be the header for this business on the locations page.
OPERATED BY: Name and username, please! If multiple characters are involved, please list all of them.
DISTRICT: What district is this location in? Check out the maps page if you aren't sure.
DESCRIPTION OF LOCATION: What can residents do here? This will become the blurb for this business on the locations page.
IMAGES: Please link three (3) URLs for the images you would like to have associated with this business. These images should be 500 x 700 px (or similar ratio) and ideally hosted somewhere that they aren't likely to be deleted. If you don't have images of your own and would like the mod team to provide the images, please at least describe the location thoroughly so we have some guidance for the aesthetic!

    BASIC AMENITIES.
Every district within the city has access to many basic amenities to make life easier for the city's residents. These amenities are regularly maintained and are free for use by the residents of the city.

    LIFESTYLE.
Gas stations. There are no functioning cars within the city, but nonetheless, gas stations stand on several street corners. The garages may contain cars with no engine, and the pumps may be operated but will not produce any fuel.

Parking lots. Surface parking and parking garages. They are mostly devoid of cars, although one or two may be present, again with no engine in the hood.

    City Overview Gas Stations Parking

Apartments. There are many apartment buildings, some smaller and some larger, scattered around the city. The apartments are unlocked and accessible to anyone at any time. They are clean and impersonal, for the most part, but those with keen eyes may find traces of the previous resident's lifestyle.

Parks. Small parks are common. Most are approximately the size of one city block, but others may be larger.

    Apartments   Park

Supermarkets. There are plenty of food sources in the city, but the supermarkets are the most comprehensive. They are fully stocked with anything one might reasonably expect to find in an average American supermarket. Produce and meat are fresh and non-perishables are frequently replenished. Nothing ever goes off or out of stock.

Convenience stores. For those in search of food that's closer at hand, try a corner convenience store. Found most often near Locations of Note and in the first floor of apartment buildings, convenience stores will carry most basic food products but may be lacking in the finer ingredients.

    Supermarkets   Convenience Stores

Restaurants. The restaurants in the city offer options of almost any food imaginable. They have no hosts or servers, but there is usually prepared food in the kitchen, and it is usually just what you've been craving.

Office buildings. These corporate office buildings are full of fluorescent lights and empty cubicles, a few pieces of paper scattered on desks, and a few folders left in organizers.

    Restaurants Office Buildings
    SUBWAY LINES AND STATIONS.
Along with the subway station at which residents first arrive in the city, there are regular stops along all the subway lines that cross the city. The subway is fully functional and free for characters to use to get around as the boundaries of the city expand. The trains are regularly maintained, making the subway a clean and convenient way to get around.

The map of subway lines can be found on the maps page. Transfer stations tend to be larger than regular stations, and may contain retail stores, small restaurants, or convenience stores for those traveling by train.

Please do note that the limits of the city shown on the current city map also apply to trains. Should the train arrive at a station that will lead outside of city limits, the train will not depart and the doors will stay open until characters disembark.

    LOCATIONS OF NOTE: DISTRICT 1.
Locations of note are areas or buildings around the city that are of special interest to
the city for purposes of stressing residents out
. Residents are encouraged to explore these locations and enjoy the various recreational and cultural offerings of the city!
    CITY HALL.
City Hall is the business and governmental center of the city. It is primarily full of offices, but the lobby area makes a lovely space for relaxing and enjoying a conversation or cup of coffee.

    CITY HALL PARK.
The park outside city hall is perfect for a leisurely stroll, featuring wide walkways, tall trees, a statue garden, and an old historical graveyard.

    THE LAUNDROMAT.
The coin laundromat is tucked into the first floor of one of the tall apartment buildings. Soap is complimentary. If you have any clothes that need a wash, perhaps items that have been dirtied by your explorations (or your travels before arriving in the city), you may want to take this opportunity to wash them for free.

    THE PSYCHIC.
The psychic shop offers herbal remedies, candles, incense, crystal balls, tarot cards, and everything in between, as well as complimentary (but often confusing) psychic readings for residents.

    THE BOOKSTORE.
Located right off the subway station by District 2, The Bookstore is a shop run primarily by Angela for the purposes of recording and collecting stories, whether those stories are based on real life events, are fairy-tales, etc. Books line the shelves, and from the front window, one can watch Angela or one of her staff members carefully pen down a story of their own making or one they heard recently. If you're interested in owning a small book or two, consider taking Line 2 on the subway and stopping in to exchange a story for it! These books can be traded back to Angela for new stories as well, similar to how a library works. Staff, map info, and contact for the bookstore can be found here.

    PAIRIDAEZA ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO.
A former garage that has been gutted, renovated and redesigned into a design studio. The red and gold lettering on a sign carefully shaped to the sunset feathers of a huma bird frames pale shutters that open to an high-arched interior of wood and steel. Neat schematics on thick sheathes of drafting paper line the walls; half-finished projects and fanciful mechanical creations sit on macgyvered rails.

Characters are free to drop by to say hi to Kaveh, use any of the tools and machinery he's cobbled together, or consult him for a construction, renovation or design project. Information on the various types of equipment, projects he's currently working on, and new additions to his workshop can be found here.

    THE WELCOME DINER.
Close to the City Hall Station that newcomers wander out from, the Welcome Diner is a corner 'diner' that lacks the design of a diner, but not the heart. Large glass windows allow a view into the repurposed store into a cosy interior lit at the back with warm lighting, with softer plush chairs towards the front and reading racks to house the information pamphlets put together, on both living within the city and uncovering its mysteries.

It functions as a diner as well, as the name implies, open all week at the start of the month, and then on set days throughout the rest. People are welcome to come for a fresh meal, with special requests allowed. A menu-slash-event board is attached to the wall outside, allowing people to leave advertisements for clubs and more. More information here.

    LOCATIONS OF NOTE: DISTRICT 2.
Locations of note are areas or buildings around the city that are of special interest to
the city for purposes of stressing residents out
. Residents are encouraged to explore these locations and enjoy the various recreational and cultural offerings of the city!
    BOWLING ALLEY.
The bowling alley offers the opportunity for solo bowling, match play, or team games! You can play as usual during the day, or come back at night for a cosmic bowling experience. The bowling alley also offers snacks, like pretzels and nachos, and adult beverages during the cosmic bowling nights.

    THE BANK.
While currency is not necessary to make transactions in the city, there is a central city bank that contains safety deposit boxes where residents are welcome to store valuables. Characters who received a safety deposit box key during the July 2023 event can use that box, and newly-arrived characters will be able to find a key bearing their name from the bank wall to access a safety deposit box of their own. Inside the box, characters may find an emotionally significant item from home—this item must fit in a pocket and may not be a weapon or a magical item.

    ICE CREAM PARLOR.
The ice cream parlor offers ice cream in a variety of different flavors (with various emotional effects), as well as other soda fountain snacks like banana splits, milkshakes, or ice cream sandwiches. It also features a jukebox that always seems to be playing a song just for you.

    SHOPPING MALL
The shopping mall contains just about any store you can imagine, from sporting goods to clothing to home decor to health and wellness. Players are welcome to assume the existence of almost any retail store that would reasonably be in a mid-sized American mall—the only caveat being, of course, no weaponry. (This includes things like archery bows at sporting goods stores.)

    LOCATIONS OF NOTE: DISTRICT 3.
Locations of note are areas or buildings around the city that are of special interest to
the city for purposes of stressing residents out
. Residents are encouraged to explore these locations and enjoy the various recreational and cultural offerings of the city!
    SWIMMING POOL.
The swimming pool is located inside the athletics building of the local university, but it's accessible to all residents of the city! It boasts two full-sized swimming pools, one for relaxation and one for athletics, as well as well-furnished locker and shower rooms and a steam sauna with essential oils for relaxation and stress relief.

    THE FUN FAIR.
CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC: Located in the southern half of the large park directly to the northeast of District 2, the fun fair is a small carnival with rides, games, and prizes to be won! Operating hours are from 6:00PM to 11:00PM City time, during which residents may play ring toss, ride the merry-go-round, walk through the hall of mirrors or tunnel of love, and eat carnival snacks to their hearts' delight. Unfortunately, the fun fair has packed up and left the city as of September 30, and now only the fond memories and a flattened patch of grass remain as evidence it was ever there.

    POISON GARDEN.
While the fun fair occupies the southern half of the park, up in the northern corner is a smaller garden full of winding paths and draping trees. Nestled somewhere within that section of the park is the poison garden, boasting an impressive array of plants both poisonous and innocuous—roses, gladiolus, and tulips alongside datura, foxglove, and belladonna. Residents are advised to explore with caution, especially when entering the greenhouse, which contains the carnivorous plants.

    THE UNIVERSITY
The university campus sprawls across several city blocks to the northwest of the park, between lines 3 and 5 of the subway. There, residents can find buildings dedicated to almost any subject they wish to study: the arts, architecture, biology, physics, electrical engineering, and literature. There is also a full-sized athletic field on the west edge of campus, as well as a number of empty student dorm buildings in close proximity to the various colleges.

    LOCATIONS OF NOTE: DISTRICT 4.
Locations of note are areas or buildings around the city that are of special interest to
the city for purposes of stressing residents out
. Residents are encouraged to explore these locations and enjoy the various recreational and cultural offerings of the city!
    ART SPACE.
In a large art space located in District 4, a new art installation has opened! There are plenty of different types of exhibits in a variety of different mediums, and residents are encouraged to go and explore all the different works. Some of the exhibits are even interactive, allowing for residents to participate in the art directly! The installation will open on November 1 and appears to run indefinitely.

    MEDIA STORE.
CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC: The media store contains just about every type of media that one could wish for: books, films, television, video games, magazines, and more. Of course, none of the titles or actors are recognizable, but that's not the point! Residents may take advantage of the media store to fulfill all their entertainment needs.

The media store will be CLOSED to the public until November 19. Characters will be able to see in the windows and figure out what type of store it is, but will not be able to break in to the store or otherwise access it at this time.

    MUSEUM.
One of District 4's crowning jewels is the museum, which features paintings, statues, and other types of art by a variety of different artists. Or at least it would, if any of the canvases actually had images on them. In reality, the art museum is currently full of blank canvases and the empty bases where statues once stood. There are no docents, and it doesn't appear that the museum has had visitors in quite a while.

While much of the museum is open and can be explored, the left-hand wing off the main lobby is CLOSED to the public until December 1, and cannot currently be accessed under any circumstances.

    SCIENCE DISCOVERY CENTER.
CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC: The Science Discovery Center boasts a number of interactive displays meant to teach the city's residents all about science! Residents can visit to play games, do mind puzzles, experiment with aerodynamics, try a chemistry experiment, or even learn about the geology of the city itself. While the permanent exhibits are open for the residents of the city explore at their leisure, the feature exhibition, "The History of Us," is currently under construction until December 19 and is not accessible by any means at this time.

    LOCATIONS OF NOTE: DISTRICT 5.
Locations of note are areas or buildings around the city that are of special interest to
the city for purposes of stressing residents out
. Residents are encouraged to explore these locations and enjoy the various recreational and cultural offerings of the city!
    THE DINER.
The diner in District 5 looks just about as normal as any diner possibly could. It serves standard American diner fare, such as all-day breakfast, hamburgers, clubs sandwiches, and milkshakes. It works just like the other restaurants do: sit down and decide what you want, and the kitchen will have it ready for you in no time. And all the food is just about as delicious as you could possibly imagine—at least the first time around… Please see the January 2024 TDM for more information.

    CONVENTION CENTER.
The convention center is actually a set of buildings on four square city blocks connected by skybridges and underground tunnels that help convention-goers get around. There is no convention currently ongoing, but a closer look at the schedule of events near the entrance of the convention center will reveal an upcoming media convention scheduled to take place at the end of January! In the meantime, the convention center is accessible, just very empty—characters might explore the large exhibition halls or wander around through the smaller meeting spaces.

    KARAOKE ROOMS.
The District 5 karaoke parlor has a number of themed rooms of different sizes, meant to fit anywhere from two to ten people at once. You might find a room with neon lights and a disco ball, or one themed after race cars, or one that looks like a pharaoh's tomb. Unfortunately, while characters can currently enter the karaoke rooms, they'll find that there's a sign on each of the doors indicating that the machines are undergoing routine maintenance that should be finished on February 1.

    FIVE-STAR HOTEL.
This luxurious hotel, which stands just a couple of blocks away from the convention center, is a marvel of elegant architecture with its leaded windows, stained glass accents, and sweeping balustrade along the staircase leading up to the entryway. Inside, the hotel is similarly appointed with plush velvet chairs, marble flooring, and polished wood furniture where travelers can sit and rest their weary selves. To the right is the check-in desk and concierge; to the left is a lobby and waiting area; and directly ahead are double doors opening out into an enclosed courtyard, where travelers might have a drink or a meal when the weather is good.

Unfortunately, the elevator at the hotel is currently out of commission, and the double doors at the top of the lobby staircase are locked and unable to be opened. Characters are able to spend time in the lobby or explore the staff areas behind the desk, but will not be able to proceed any deeper into the hotel.
